Ed Reyes - Bicycle Advocate

This is a short compilation of Councilman Ed Reyes, from Los Angeles' Council District 1, speaking during a City Council meeting that took place on January 29, 2008. The meeting was dedicated entirely to transportation planning and funding.

There were many highlights of the day - Rita Robertson, the newly installed head of the DOT, explaining that she had no real connection with planning efforts in the city; Gail Goldberg, head of the Planning Department, explaining that her staff did not do urban planning regarding roadway use; and I could go on.

The comments from Councilman Reyes, taken from the beginning of the meeting, reflect his role as a visionary on the council. He has been out in front of his colleagues on many ideas: revitalizing the L.A. river, reforming planning department procedures, and focusing away from automobiles and towards other modes of transport.

The Council adopted the Transportation Strategic Plan's draft Mission Statement, created by Councilwoman Gruel and her staff. You can view that mission statement online by visiting Councilwoman Gruel's web-site.
